Grocon contracted Delta Group in 2012 to complete demolition and major civil construction works for the $1.2b development of the Victorian Comprehensive Cancer Centre.

 
The scope of works included:

  • Demolition of existing basement structure, including recycling of construction waste materials.
  • Bulk/detailed excavation works allowing for the construction of pad footings, pile caps, strip footings and lift for rafts, including the removal and transport of services spoil as will as supply and placement of reinforcement and concrete.
  • Set out and installation of retention piles, including trimming, as well as foundation piles, pile caps, capping beams and temporary anchors.
  • Supply and placement of raft retention, including shotcrete walls.
  • Supply and placement of batter backfill.
  • Slab preparation layer.
  • Supply and placement of crane base piles and crane base.
  • Traffic management and supervision.
  • Basement storm water drainage and site dewatering.
  • Emissions, noise and vibration controls.
  • Civil landscaping.

This high profile Public-Private Partnership (PPP) development involved Federal, State and Local Government authorities as well as the Plenary Health consortium and an array of local stakeholders.  A particular challenge of our work involved the surrounding Parkville Biomedical Precinct and close proximity of operating hospitals and medical centres.  As a result, our ability to effectively engage stakeholders and to implement effective emissions, noise and vibration controls was paramount. Other key achievement included:

  •  Excavation of 300,000 sqm of spoil and construction of a 6 level (25 metre) basement – the largest excavaton undertaken in Australia since 2007.
  • 3,000 sqm of detailed excavation for pad footings.
  • 7,000 cubic metres of shotcrete retention walls.
  • 4.5 metre deep cor raft.
  • 260 deep bored retention piles, as will as 500 post tension retention anchors and 1,100 tensioned nails.
  • 3,000t of slab preparation.
  • Hard and soft civil landscaping works.
