Westfield Miranda Demolition

Summary: 

Delta Group was contracted in June 2013 for the demolition of a 6 storey building and a 3 level car park​, and the removal of bonded and friable asbestos and the installation of penetrations to all levels of car parks.

Project Overview

​Highlights:

  • Using cutting edge technology of engineered temporary steel bracing to stabilize building during demolition, with a 70t Longreach excavator being used for the job.
  • Demolition of car-park structure was adjacent to existing tenancies with no disruption to the tenants daily business;
  • 30,000tonnes of concrete was removed within the 2 month program using induced collapse within a localized area of the slabs by a fleet of 45 tonne excavators. 

Scope of Work:

Demolition of:               

  1. Strip out of tenancies
  2. Removal of bonded and friable asbestos
  3. Installation of temporary structural steel and propping
  4. Demolition of 6 storey tower
  5. Demolition of 3 level car park
  6. Installation of penetrations to all levels of car parks

Use of 70 tonne Longreach excavator to demolish 6 storey tower in view of public.

  1. Demolition unstable building – introduction of engineered temporary steel bracing to stabilize building during the demolition faze.
  2. Demolition of car park structure adjacent to live tenancies. All shop fronts were kept open during the demolition process; with no loss of business to the clients in the adjacent areas.
  3. Removal of 30,000 tonne of concrete in 2 month program – programing demolition to work on multiple work fronts using 45 tonne excavators.​
    Delta demolished slabs in quick succession by employing a method of induced collapse in a localized area of the slabs, in turn sped up the program of the project.
  4. The columns on levels had no reinforcements in the friction joints. Although the car park demolition couldn't be carried out as intended as columns on levels 3M-3, 3-2, 2-1 had no reinforcements in the friction joints.
    To address this Delta's structural design team developed suitable methods to spread the structure load safely which prevented an uncontrolled collapse.
  5. Once the final design was approved, steel braces were then erected on the structure to resume the demolition.
  6. When demolition was complete, Delta removed of slabs and stripped-out the shops, and then piled them for further processing.
